Product

A: EduMic offers four different modes of operation:

• Microphone mode (20 m range)
• Jack mode (20 m range)
• FM mode (3 m range)
• Telecoil mode (3 m range)

A: The FM connection is prioritised when both FM receiver and a jack cable are connected to EduMic.

A: It occurs when you push the button and the hardware powers on the chip and electronics inside EduMic. However, if the voltage is too low, so that the chip cannot run, another circuit will disable it soon after. This means that it's not the software that generates the light but the small current in the system.

Use

A: Yes. The charging process will automatically stop when the battery is fully charged.

A: 2.5 hours.

A: The EduMic uses a sealed battery. You must return the EduMic to Oticon so the battery can be replaced.

A: EduMic does not offer this functionality. If the student needs this, we recommend that you connect EduMic with the jack cable to the Juno sound field system from Frontrow or a similar system. Juno can mix streams from the teacher's Juno microphone and the audio from external audio devices.

A: The recommended distance is 15 to 20 cm from the mouth.

A: The sound is caused by a ground loop that's created in this setup. You can use EduMic with the jack cable and charge the device simulatenously, as long as a different power source is used. It's only when the USB charging cable and the jack cable are connected to the same PC/laptop that the low-pitched sound will be heard.

A: The EduMic will always be streaming when turned on. EduMic will therefore not enter stand-by mode.

A: There is a minor risk of interference. A workaround could be to change frequency band (e.g. to 5 GHz) on the transmitter. If this doesn't help, you can try changing to earlevel Roger X with BTE instruments and the FM10 adapter or Telecoil program using Roger My Link with miniRITE T or miniRITE R.

A: EduMic is not designed to work as a table microphone. It is calibrated to a signal at 20 cm from the microphone (80/89 dB SPL). On the table, the speaker will be further away, and the voice might not be sufficiently amplified.

A: Automatic program change is only available on hearing aids on firmware 5.0 and later. Update the hearing aid firmware to enable this feature. Note, the feature will be available after you've manually selected the EduMic program for the first time for firmware 4.0 and earlier. It is recommended to contact your hearing care professional for an update of your Opn Play or Opn S hearing aids to firmware 8.0 for stable functionality of this feature.

A: Yes, the EduMic can stream in any program including FM while charging. However, when charging, the FM audio will be degraded.

A: Yes. You can connect EduMic to different sound field systems such as Juno from Front Row by using the jack cable. You can also connect a TV Adapter 3.0 in the classroom and use EduMic as the bring-along-microphone for other classes and teachers.

A: No. You can only connect and stream sound from one device at a time. However, ConnectClip can be used to increase or decrease the volume of the hearing instruments while EduMic is transmitting.

A: Yes, but with limitations. You can only connect and stream sound from one device at a time. Using Opn S, Opn Play, Xceed or Xceed Play (2019) or later hearing aids allows you to use up to 4 EduMics. However, only one EduMic can be active at a time. When two EduMics are switched on and within range of the paired hearing instruments, each EduMic can take over the streaming rights by pressing the push button twice (briefly). Note, it takes approximately 8 - 10 seconds before the hearing aids will be able to hear the transmission from the most recently activated EduMic.

A: This is not possible. You cannot run a class with only EduMic when you have children with non-compatible hearing aids. You need an Oticon 2.4 GHz Bluetooth® low energy receiver to stream from EduMic. This receiver is only in Oticon’s hearing aids (and Ponto 4 from Oticon Medical, and Bernafon and Sonic hearing aids as well). We do not offer a 2.4 GHz universal receiver like the Amigo R2 universal FM receiver.

2.4GHz not available in the IIC and CIC models.

A: Yes, this can be done through the Genie software (for hearing care professionals) or through the Oticon On App (for users).

A: No. EduMic has no wired headset option.

A: No. When an FM receiver is connected to EduMic, it switches to FM mode and the microphone is disabled. In FM mode the EduMic should also be placed near the student (within 3 meters). To return to microphone mode, unplug the FM receiver from EduMic.

Pairing and connection

A: The maximum distance for pairing EduMic with hearing aids is 20 cm.

A: If the student is using Opn S1 (2019) or later, the hearing aids will automatically connect to the EduMic that was most recently connected. When multiple EduMics are being used in two separate classrooms, and are paired to the same hearing aids, either turn off the EduMic that the student should not stream sounds from and connect with the appropriate EduMic. If the pairing is no longer relevant, consider clearing all pairings from this device.

A: If the student uses Opn or Siya hearing aids, it is only possible to pair one EduMic or TV adapter to the hearing aids at a time. If the student uses more than one of these devices, re-pairing will be required each time they want to use a different device. If the student is using Opn S1 (2019) hearing aids or later, the hearing aids will automatically connect to any EduMic it has been paired to (up to 4 devices).

A: Pairing time is between 34-47 sec for a set of hearing aids. Pairing time will increase when you try to pair multiple heairng aids. We recommend only pairing one set at a time to keep track of which hearing aids have been paired.

A: EduMic holds a memory of up to 20 hearing aids (10 sets or 20 monaural fittings) that will benefit from 'Automatic program change' in the hearing aids. EduMic deletes the least used hearing aids from the internal memory if more than 20 hearing aids are paired with EduMic. However, these users can still access the streamed signal by manually changing to the EduMic program in their hearing aids.

A: EduMic has Autopairing. This means it will automatically pair to hearing aids in pairing mode that are within a 20 centimeter range. The status indicator will stop flashing blue when pairing is complete and turn green.

A: Turn EduMic ON then press and hold down the push button for 12 seconds until the status indicator turns RED. EduMic has now been cleared of all pairings.

A: EduMic has two operating ranges: In microphone and jack mode it is 20 meters. For FM and telecoil mode it is 3 meters.

A: Yes. You can connect the EduMic with the 3.5mm jack cable.

A: No. The EduMic and Connect Clip can be used seperately to perform different functions in the classroom, but the hearing aids can only connect to one device at a time.

A: The CROS transmitter cannot receive a streamed signal. However, EduMic will stream to the receiving hearing instrument.  

A: You can only view one set of paired hearing instruments in the Oticon ON App. You would need to connect to each set of hearing instruments separately if volume adjustments were needed.

Hearing aid program

A: When an Edumic is within range (20 m) the hearing aids automatically change to the EduMic program. The EduMic program is added to the program cycle and so if program change is enabled in the hearing aids, the student can use the program button to change between programs.

A: The switch should be set at position 'oo' (FM + mic), and it's recommended to lock the switch in this position in the Receiver menu in T31. If switch is set in position 'o' (FM only) instead of 'oo', there is no functional difference while connected to EduMic. However, the 100Hz harmonics OBLE noise will increase by 10dB.

A: For several reasons:

1. To be backwards compatible with Velox based hearing aids, all the way back to 2016, a program needs to be shared between connectivity devices - the platform does not support a new program.

2. In 19.1 the “multiple TV Adapter” feature was introduced and this feature is also highly relevant for EduMic. E.g. when using one EduMic in school and one at home, you do not need re-pair all the time.

3. TV Adapter 3.0 use is logged to be viewed in the Genie 2 Data Logging (ConnectClip isn't). This is also important for EduMic use.

Additional accessories are available for purchase and is not part of the hearing aid package.

A: When verifying Roger it will most likely be transparent out of the box. Amigo R2 comes with a default HA+FM gain of +8 dB, and should most likely be reduced to +4 dB gain using the Receiver menu in T31. The recommended position of the R2 switch is 'oo'.
